Studio Ghibli Returns Its Famous Kiki's Delivery Service Bag to Official Store

In Studio Ghibli's iconic 1989 fantasy film, Kiki's Delivery Service, the titular heroine famously sets out with nothing more than a cat, a broomstick, a radio and a small shoulder bag. Recently, Studio Ghibli's online shop reintroduced its popular leather replica of Kiki's famous bag to its expansive digital catalog.

Donguri Sora is Japan's official purveyor of licensed Ghibli merchandise. Released in collaboration with brand partner Benelic, Donguri Closet's exclusive "Kiki's Journey" shoulder bag is directly inspired by its cinematic counterpart. The "himeji" leather exterior is a pale orange color with a glossy finish. The sole design difference from the film version is visible in the bottom left corner, which contains a cute motif of Kiki flying on her broomstick. Notably, this is the same design used for Kiki's business sign in the movie. Additionally, there are words on the shoulder strap that read "Miss Witch" -- a subtle nod to Kiki's friend Tombo, who gives her a party invitation containing the same polite form of address. Ghibli fans can kick back in style with Donguri Sora's Hawaiian attire series, which features designs inspired by Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service.

While Donguri Closet's latest re-release is a particularly special boon for Kiki cosplayers, the bag's design also makes it a great practical choice for casual outings. The main inner pocket contains a soft cotton lining, providing extra cushioning for witchy knickknacks. According to the site description, it is large enough to carry most conventionally-sized wallets and cellphones, as well as plastic bottles containing up to 500 ml of liquid. Including tax, the retail price is approximately 24,200 yen (US$157.81), making this one of Donguri Sora's more costly Kiki-themed gems.

Written and directed by famed Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki, Kiki's Delivery Service tells the story of a 13-year-old witch who leaves home for a year as part of her magical training. Despite reservations from her black cat, Jiji, Kiki decides to alight in a bustling seaside town named Koriko Village. Shortly after arriving, she does a favor for a kindly bakery owner named Osono, who then offers Kiki a place to stay in exchange for help around her shop. With a place to live secured, Kiki decides to use her sole magical talent -- her ability to fly -- to start a flying delivery business. While this job brings Kiki a lot of joy, it also comes with its fair share of disappointments and challenges. Ultimately, dealing with these problems helps Kiki grow -- both as a witch and as a person.

In Japan and the U.S., Studio Ghibli's film library, including Kiki's Delivery Service, is available to stream on Max. Netflix has made the studio's productions available in most other major regions, including Canada, Europe, Latin America, Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Additionally, a number of popular Ghibli features are returning to United States theaters for a limited time as part of Ghibli Fest 2024, Fathom Event's annual showcase of the studio's most beloved animated works. Upcoming features include Ponyo (2008), Whisper of the Heart (1995), The Cat Returns (2002) and Howl's Moving Castle (2004).
