Confused Aldi shopper spots 'annoying' paper bag change - and claims there's 'no way' to carry groceries up stairs | The US Sun

ALDI customers are frustrated with the store's new shopping bags that don't have handles.

Shoppers love Aldi for its low prices, but the new paper bags may send them to other stores.

The paper bags, sold for a small fee, are hard to carry without handles.

"Aldi, just left my local store and only could find regular paper bags with no handles. Is that a permanent change?" wrote an X user named Nowhere Man (@nowhere606).

"I'm a DoorDasher, and there's no way I can carry a large order to a third-floor apartment without handles."

A second customer questioned why the bags without handles were the same price as the other ones despite being smaller.

Typically, the cost of paper bags varies based on location.

"First, Aldi took away the plastic bags. Now they only have paper bags with no handles," added another shopper.

"Please be for real! Y'all are annoying as hell, Aldi."

The retailer began phasing out plastic bags in 2022 to eliminate them by the end of 2023.

In February, Aldi claimed it was the first major retailer to get rid of plastic shopping bags, preventing nearly 4,400 tons of plastic from going to landfills.

Other shoppers recently expressed their frustration over the store's self-checkout policy.

Shopper Alexis Kauffman visited a newly opened Aldi store in Clinton, Missouri, and said an employee said the store would transition to only self-checkout registers.

"From a mom who goes into Aldi for a loaded cart and not just a few items, I despise this," she wrote in a Facebook post.

"Who wants to check out all 200 items of groceries while they have children, and sometimes a cranky baby too?"

In the comments, local shoppers said it would be "pathetic" to shop at a store with only self-service registers.

"At some point, these huge companies have to quit being so damn greedy and provide the services we're used to," commented one person.

Another location had recently opened in nearby Bolivar, where Alexis said there was only one staffed register open with six people in line.

"I was not happy. I'm like, dude, there has to be another employee here to help me check out," she wrote.

Aldi pledged to phase out all plastic bags by the end of 2023

The company announced in February that it had succeeded in its goal.

The measure prevented nearly 4,400 tons of plastic from going to landfills.

But the new paper bags don't feature handles, and it hasn't gone over well with shoppers.

Many say they're hard to carry and hope the old bags make a comeback.

Unfortunately, she ended up having to wait in line.

In February, Aldi celebrated installing its first fully automated self-checkout system at a store in the US.

Customers can pay without scanning as cameras and sensors in the ceiling of the Aurora, Illinois, location track what customers pick up.

The service is called “Aldi Go,” and shoppers must download an app to use the system.

The app includes a feature that allows staff to approve purchases of age-restricted items like alcohol.

Shoppers don't have to wait in line and can scan the app, pay, and walk out of the store.

Aldi recently bought two locations of an out-of-business discount store.
